The Oxford Dictionary Named The Word Of The Year 2023 - "Rizz"
The Oxford Dictionary announced the word of the year 2023, which became a slang variant of the word "charisma" - "Rizz", meaning romantic attractiveness or charm.
The Oxford Dictionary made this announcement on its social media page.
Literally, "Rizz" means "to attract" or "to tempt." This includes the ability to attract romantic or sexual partners.
The word "Rizz" gained incredible popularity after English actor and dancer Tom Holland, known for his role as Spider-Man in the latest Marvel Universe films, stated in an interview with American internet media BuzzFeed that he has "no 'Rizz' at all." This statement went viral.
It's worth noting that before choosing the main word of 2023, Oxford experts compiled a shortlist of eight popular words. After fourteen days of open voting, the most popular options were selected.
In addition to the word "Rizz," three other words made it to the shortlist:
-
"prompt" - instructions or hints provided by users to artificial intelligence programs to generate corresponding content.
-
"situationship" - unofficial romantic or sexual relationships without commitments, where people in such relationships remain somewhere between friendship and a romantic partnership.
-
"swiftie" - a term referring to dedicated fans of the American singer and songwriter Taylor Swift.
Ultimately, among the contenders, the winner was the word "rizz."
Recall that last month, the Cambridge Dictionary also named the most popular word of 2023. It was the word "hallucinate," used in cases where artificial intelligence generates unreliable information in its response.
"The Cambridge Dictionary team chose hallucinate as its Word of the Year 2023 as it recognized that the new meaning gets to the heart of why people are talking about AI," says the Cambridge Dictionary team's statement.
According to experts, "with the advent of new technology, a new language emerges," which is why in 2023, the Cambridge Dictionary decided to add new definitions related to AI to its word list. This includes expressions such as a large language model (or LLM), generative artificial intelligence (or GenAI), and GPT.
Additionally, experts emphasize that this year, a large number of existing words, such as "hallucinate," have acquired new meanings related to artificial intelligence.
