"What am I doing today for the Ukrainian people? Am I doing something?" With this question, Pope Francis addressed the participants in a Sunday prayer in June 2022, and its relevance was reiterated by the State Secretary of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, in a video message to participants in the meeting of security and foreign policy advisors regarding the implementation of President Volodymyr Zelensky's Peace Formula, which took place in Malta.
Commenting on this initiative, the previous rounds of which were held in Copenhagen (June 5, 2023) and Jeddah (August 5-6, 2023), Cardinal Parolin noted that these are "commendable efforts deserving of support." Not only because they are aimed at finding specific solutions to repair the damage caused by the war but also because "they encourage us not to consider armed confrontation as an inevitable tool for resolving conflicts."
"This is the fundamental truth that the Holy See has repeatedly proclaimed in the face of the wars that have torn the world apart in recent periods of history. Pope Francis, with unprecedented persistence, renewed the call for peace, both in his countless speeches and through actions in support of Ukraine," he recalled, pointing out that the participation of representatives of numerous states and international organizations indicates that "we have not resigned ourselves to the tragedy unfolding before our eyes and that we must have the courage to confront it." "Finding a solution is not only Ukraine's responsibility but also a shared responsibility," emphasized the head of Vatican diplomacy.
Noting that many international entities are making efforts to enable "Ukraine to protect the integrity of its territory, provide its citizens with security and necessities, and achieve the desired peace," Cardinal Parolin regretfully acknowledged that there is still a long way to go. Thus, he asserts that "even greater and more creative efforts at all levels" are needed to overcome obstacles and open seemingly unacceptable or impossible paths.
In his words, the Holy See calls for respect for international law, especially regarding territorial integrity, and encourages all initiatives aimed at finding a just and stable peace in Ukraine.
As reported by The Gaze, during the two-day summit held in Malta on October 28 and 29, security advisors discussed President Zelensky's 10-point Peace Formula, addressing various issues ranging from child abductions to the ecological damage caused by Russia's war in Ukraine.
