Time Reveals Top 10 Contenders for 2024 Person of the Year
American magazine Time has announced the contenders for the title of Person of the Year 2024. The list includes 10 candidates. Among them is Kamala Harris, an American politician who was Donald Trump's rival in this year's US presidential election. Donald Trump is also on the list. The publication writes that he ‘changed the American electorate by winning the popular vote for the first time and turning every swing state red’.
Also on the list is Princess Kate Middleton of Wales, who made headlines this year for her cancer. In September, Middleton announced that she had completed chemotherapy.
The other nominees include Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, ‘one of the most influential and controversial world leaders this year’, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who made history by being sworn in ‘as the first female president of Mexico and the first Jewish leader in the country in more than 200 years of independence’, and Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of the deceased Russian politician Alexei Navalny, whom the publication called ‘the first lady of the Russian opposition’.
The list also includes the world's richest man, Elon Musk. ‘2024 was the year when Musk stepped into the world of politics. He supported Trump in his election campaign. After Trump's victory, Musk's power only grew,’ the newspaper writes. Musk has already been named TIME's Person of the Year in 2021.
The top ten also includes Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, who was ‘under the microscope as he dealt with a government audit of Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms.’
TIME magazine will announce the 2024 Person of the Year on Thursday.
Since 1927, TIME has named the person, group, or concept that has had the greatest impact, for better or worse, on the world in the past 12 months.
In 2023, TIME magazine chose pop star Taylor Swift as its Person of the Year. Other previous winners include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the ‘spirit of Ukraine’ in 2022, tech billionaire Elon Musk in 2021, and the fight against Ebola in 2014.
