Ukraine Proposes Free Trade Agreement With U.S. to Deepen Economic Partnership
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed a free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States in a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukraine’s top trade official confirmed on Monday, The Gaze reports, citing United 24 Media.
Taras Kachka, Ukraine’s trade representative and deputy economic minister, disclosed the proposal during a conference in Kyiv, describing it as the next step in strengthening bilateral economic ties.
“We are interested in FTAs with all G7 countries,” Kachka said. “What we still need are the United States and Japan.”
Ukraine already holds trade agreements with the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Kachka emphasized that building on the existing U.S.-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund could lay the groundwork for a comprehensive trade agreement, though discussions remain at an early stage.
Zelenskyy’s proposal is seen as part of a broader effort to deepen U.S.-Ukraine economic cooperation as the country prepares for a post-war recovery. While an FTA would not offer the same level of security as NATO membership, Kachka noted that it could expand American economic interests in Ukraine, “potentially deterring Russian actions and reinforcing Washington’s commitment to Kyiv.”
According to Kachka, the letter also included proposals for enhanced cooperation in the military-industrial and trade sectors. The Ukrainian presidential office confirmed the message had been delivered to the White House, but did not release further details.
The U.S. government has not yet responded publicly to the proposal.
