Ukraine Stops Transit of Russian Gas in the Interest of National Security
At 7 a.m. on 1 January 2025, the transit of Russian natural gas through Ukraine was stopped in the interests of national security, the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy reported on its website.
The taps have been shut off both at the Russian gas inlet on Ukraine's border with Russia and at the Russian gas outlet on Ukraine's border with Slovakia.
Thus, the 5-year transit contract between Naftogaz of Ukraine and Gazprom, signed on 30 December 2019, has expired.
Ukraine has informed its international partners in accordance with the established procedure.
‘We have stopped the transit of Russian gas, this is a historic event. Russia is losing markets and will suffer financial losses. Europe has already made a decision to refuse Russian gas. And the European Repower EU initiative envisages exactly what Ukraine has done today,’ said Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko.
Currently, Ukraine's gas transmission system is operating in a mode without Russian gas transit.
The gas transmission system infrastructure has been prepared in advance to operate in zero transit mode and ensure reliable gas supply to Ukrainian consumers.
