Ukrainian Lugers Win First Historic World Cup Bronze in Latvia
Ukraine's luge team won bronze at the World Cup in Sigulda, Latvia, Suspilne Sport reports.
The Ukrainians won the bronze medal in the mixed relay, finishing 3.947 seconds behind the leaders from Germany. The team included singles Yulianna Tunitska and Andriy Mandziy, as well as doubles lugers Ihor Hoy and Nazariy Kachmar and Olena Stetskiv and Oleksandra Mokh.
The Ukrainians made it to the podium, becoming one of three teams to cover the entire track distance, while four teams did not finish.
This is the ninth medal for the Ukrainian national team in the history of the Luge World Cup and the first in the relay race. The last time Ukrainians won a medal at the World Cup was in 2008, when Natalia Yakushenko won silver in the single event, becoming the only athlete to bring Ukraine all eight previous World Cup medals.
