Zelenskyy, Estonian FM Tsahkna Deepen Defense Ties and Sanctions Coordination
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in Kyiv with Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, as both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening defense cooperation, expanding drone production, and tightening sanctions against Russia.
The Gaze reports this, referring to the Office of the President of Ukraine.
During the meeting, Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to Estonia for its contribution to the PURL initiative, which enables Ukraine and its European partners to procure U.S.-sourced weapons.
He emphasized Estonia’s role in bolstering Ukraine’s defence posture and thanked Tallinn for its steadfast backing.
The two leaders also discussed strengthening cooperation through the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) and evolving joint efforts to step up pressure on Russia.
Estonia outlined proposals for tariff measures and preparations for the EU’s 20th sanctions package against Moscow.
Looking ahead to Estonia’s chairmanship of the Nordic‑Baltic Eight (NB8) next year, Zelenskyy and Tsahkna discussed key priorities: defence assistance, Ukraine’s EU accession process, reconstruction efforts, security cooperation, and the utilisation of frozen Russian assets.
In recognition of Estonia’s support, President Zelenskyy awarded Minister Tsahkna the Ukrainian Order of Merit, II Class. The honour underlined the country’s role as a trusted ally in Ukraine’s ongoing struggle.
“We are deeply grateful to your people and your government for standing with us from the very beginning of this war. Thank you for supporting our path toward the European Union and our sanctions policy. We are also thankful for the share of your national budget directed to support our army and our soldiers,” Zelenskyy said.
As The Gaze previously reported, Estonia has announced new financial aid for Ukraine’s energy sector and confirmed plans to host the Ukraine Recovery Conference in 2027.
