Zelenskyy Hails Nicusor Dan’s Election as Romanian President, Calling It a “Historic Victory”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has congratulated Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan on his election as President of Romania, calling his victory “historic” and expressing hope for stronger bilateral ties between Kyiv and Bucharest.
The Gaze reports on this with reference to Zelenskyy's post on social media platform X.
Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of Romania as a close neighbor and strategic ally, especially amid ongoing regional security challenges.
“Congratulations to Nicusor Dan on his historic victory in Romania’s presidential elections,” Zelenskyy wrote. “For Ukraine, it is vital to have a reliable partner in Romania, and we are confident that this partnership will only grow stronger. Together, we can reinforce both our nations and our shared European future.”
Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s deep respect for the Romanian people and expressed his commitment to advancing the countries’ strategic cooperation in the interests of regional stability, security, and prosperity.
Final results showed Dan winning with 53.6% of the vote, defeating far-right AUR party leader George Simion, who secured 46.4%. Turnout reached 65%, the highest since 1996. Despite initially declaring an early lead, Simion conceded defeat and congratulated Dan, marking a peaceful transition after a heated campaign.
Dan’s win as a pro-European and pro-Ukrainian candidate is being viewed as a critical moment not only for Romania’s domestic politics but also for broader European unity, particularly as Ukraine continues to seek robust support from its allies in the face of Russian aggression.
