186 Ukrainian Artists and 102 Media Workers Killed by Russia During War

Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, 186 Ukrainian artists and 102 media workers have been killed.
The Gaze reports on this with reference to the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine.
According to the ministry, ‘this data is not only about the scale of losses, but also reminds us of the tragic pages of our history. Just as in the 20s and early 30s of the 20th century, the Stalinist regime destroyed generations of Ukrainian artists, so today Russia is purposefully destroying the cultural elite of Ukraine.’
‘The literary and artistic generation known as the ‘Executed Renaissance’ gave the world masterpieces of literature, painting, music and theatre. These artists were the pride of our nation. Today, we are once again losing not just talented Ukrainians, but a part of our soul, because each of our artists is a unique personality who enriched Ukrainian culture,’ the ministry said.
Journalists working in Ukraine are producing important news, investigations and reports in a high-risk environment, the ICRC stressed. They record the events of the war to provide Ukraine and the world with reliable information about what is happening.
‘Media professionals are collecting irrefutable evidence of the occupiers‘ crimes 24/7 and highlighting the strength, heroism and courage of our defenders,’ the ministry stressed.
According to the ICRC, seven foreign media workers were killed during the war.
The ministry stressed that Russia's systematic crimes against journalists and media pose a serious threat to freedom of speech and information security, undermine democratic values and human rights, and called for the memory of the victims to be preserved.
As The Gaze reported earlier, as of March 2025, 591 Ukrainian athletes and coaches have been killed by Russia, 22 are held in captivity, and 11 are missing.
