“Theater of the Avant-Garde” Brings Hidden Ukrainian Art to European Audiences

In Zurich, Galerie Calabro has opened a unique installation called “Theater of the Avant-Garde,” revealing little-known aspects of Ukrainian art to European audiences, The Gaze informs, citing the Embassy of Ukraine in the Swiss Confederation on Facebook.
On August 7, the Avant-Garde Theater project launched in Zurich, presenting the unique artistic practices of the Ukrainian avant-garde on the European stage for the first time.
The installation revives artistic traditions that have remained little known to the general public and combines them with the spirit of the avant-garde movement that originated in the cradle of Dadaism.
The curators of the exhibition, Anastasia Biletska and Julia Virz, invited visitors to immerse themselves in the special atmosphere of an artistic journey through time. They presented a new collection of wallpapers entitled “Archive Fabrics & Wallpapers” (2025), which was the result of a unique collaboration between Ukrainian designer Yevgen Litvinenko and the Ivan Franko Theater in Kyiv.
This installation not only showcases the creative achievements of the Ukrainian avant-garde but also emphasizes the importance of cultural dialogue between countries, opening new horizons for understanding and appreciating Ukrainian art in a European context.
The Ukrainian Embassy in the Swiss Confederation was represented at the opening of the exhibition by advisor Samvel Arustamyan, who noted: “We are returning the true names of Ukrainian artists, whose work has influenced the entire world, to the world, and we are doing so here, in the heart of Europe, so that no one can ever erase Ukraine's mark on art history again.”
As The Gaze reported earlier, Ukrainian director Pavlo Ostrikov’s film *U Are the Universe* won both the Youth Award and the audience award at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland.
