Australian Oscar Piastri Wins his First Formula 1 Grand Prix in Hungary
Australian racer Oscar Piastri won his first Formula 1 Grand Prix in Hungary on Sunday.
This was reported by the Formula 1 website and CNN Sport.
The McLaren driver qualified second and took the lead at the start of the race from his teammate Lando Norris.
However, Norris made his second pit stop before Piastri, cutting his teammate off and eventually taking the lead after the Australian pitted three laps later.
But McLaren's plan was to allow Piastra to overtake Norris and regain the lead. However, the Australian could not close the gap. Norris did not obey the team's calls to slow down and let Piastri pass.
It seemed that McLaren was heading for an unfortunate intra-team conflict, but Norris eventually calmed down and passed Piastri on lap 68 of 70, allowing McLaren to finish in first place with two pit stops for the first time since 2021.
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton crossed the finish line in third place, claiming a record 200th podium in his career.
Although the celebration was somewhat low-key, it was still an important milestone in Piastri's career.
‘It's a very, very special day. It's really the day I dreamed of as a kid,’ said the 23-year-old Australian.
Last season, Piastri won the sprint race in Qatar and on Sunday he scored his first official grand prix win, becoming the fifth Australian to do so. He also became the first rider born in the 2000s to win the race.
