Bayern Munich Loses in Champions League Group Stage for the First Time in 7 Years
Bayern Munich has broken its record-breaking undefeated streak in the Champions League group stage, which had lasted since 2017. In the second round of the main round of the tournament, the German club was defeated by Aston Villa 0-1.
This was reported by the UEFA website and The Independent.
Prior to this game, Munich last lost in the Champions League group stage seven years ago - they suffered a crushing defeat to PSG (0: 3) in the 2017/18 season.
Since then, Bayern have played 41 consecutive matches at this stage without defeat - a record in the Champions League.
The English scored the winning goal in the 79th minute of the match. Pau Torres assisted striker John Duran. There were no more goals in the match.
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany commented on the match: ‘We started well, the first quarter of an hour was good. After that, we lost a little bit of momentum. The second half was much better, with more control and a bigger lead, we had three or four big chances that we didn't convert, but then suddenly we conceded a goal. We have many more games to play and we will also learn from this experience,’ Kompany was quoted as saying by Bayern's official website.
After two rounds in the Champions League, Bayern Munich is in 15th place in the standings with three points. The next opponent of the Munich team in the Champions League will be Barcelona. The match will take place on 23 October.
One of Bayern's rivals in the Champions League group round is Ukrainian FC Shakhtar. The match between the teams will take place on 10 December in Gelsenkirchen.
