Belgium Commits €140 Million to Ukrainian Air Defense

Belgium will contribute €140 million this year to support Ukraine’s air defense against Russian attacks, Defense Minister Theo Francken announced on Wednesday during a parliamentary session.
The funds will be allocated through the German-led initiative Immediate Action on Air Defence (IAAD), The Gaze reports, citing HLN.
In addition to financial support, Belgium may also deploy its A400M transport aircraft to provide logistical assistance.
Francken, a member of the N-VA party, made the remarks in response to questions from MPs Peter Buysrogge (N-VA) and Christophe Lacroix (PS).
He noted that the contribution follows a formal request from Germany’s foreign and defense ministers and that he will discuss the matter further with the German ambassador on Thursday.
On the domestic front, Francken said Belgium plans to place its first air defense orders later this year as part of efforts to rebuild its own capabilities.
The country will coordinate its efforts with neighboring states, including the Netherlands and Luxembourg, and is also in talks with Denmark about information-sharing. “The aim is to involve our own industry,” the minister stated.
MP Peter Buysrogge welcomed the move, saying:
“After years of neglect, it’s positive to finally see progress. It’s good that we’re cooperating with our neighbors and that our industry is being taken into account. We’re contributing to European security, but also ensuring that Belgian companies have a seat at the table. This way, we’re creating jobs and keeping expertise here.”
