Boris Johnson Warns Donald Trump Not to Abandon US Support for Ukraine
Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has issued a direct call to former US President Donald Trump, urging him not to withdraw US support for Ukraine if he becomes president again in 2024. This information comes from Politico.
Writing for Spectator after a trip to Ukraine, the former British Prime Minister, who has actively lobbied among wavering Republicans to maintain faith in Ukraine, warned that a Russian triumph could backfire on any Trump administration.
"Putin's victory would be a disaster for the West and American leadership, and I don't believe it's a result any US president could easily stomach, let alone one who wanted to make America great again," wrote Johnson.
Johnson stated that if Ukraine manages to fend off Russia, "the opposite will happen."
"The world will receive a very different message: that we care about democracy, that we are ready to uphold our principles, and that the West still has the courage to stand for something until we succeed," he added.
Johnson's comments come amidst concerns among Ukrainians about what Trump's presidency would mean for Western support.
Since leaving office last year, the former UK leader has energetically advocated for continued support for Ukraine. In May, he attended a private dinner in Dallas, Texas, as part of efforts to bolster support for Ukrainian military efforts among skeptical Republicans. He also dined with Trump during the same trip, and Johnson's spokesperson indicated that he stressed the "vital importance of Ukraine's victory."
As previously reported by The Gaze, President Joe Biden is expected to make a final decision soon on the delivery of long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine.
This is a significant move recommended by the State Department and the Department of Defense after several months of requests from Ukraine.
The final decision on the missile delivery has not been made yet, but the "likelihood of it happening now is much higher than before. I just don't know when the delivery will start," said one official familiar with the discussions.
In recent weeks, discussions about supplying Ukraine with long-range ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) missiles have intensified.
