Brussels Street Cleaners Go on Strike to Demand Better Working Conditions
Street cleaners of a municipal company in one of the communes of Brussels have gone on a week-long strike to demand better working conditions.
This was reported by The Brussels Times.
The janitors' union complains that in recent years they have faced more incidents at work, working conditions have deteriorated, and the municipal authorities have not noticed their complaints.
They plan to go on strike from 12 to 19 September inclusive, but the statement also noted that the protest will continue ‘until a positive response from the authorities’.
The problems include a lack of staff for the actual volume of work, a lack of working equipment, frequent equipment breakdowns and the growing number of illegal dumpsites.
Cleaners are demanding higher wages and additional staff, as well as the possibility for employees over 55 to take shorter shifts while maintaining their wages.
They also demand that there be ‘zero tolerance for aggression and disrespect’ towards members of the profession.
