Canada Begins G7 Presidency for 2025 Following Italy
Canada began its G7 presidency on 1 January, taking over the G7 leadership from Italy on a rotating basis. Canada's presidency will last throughout 2025.
Earlier, Canada noted that the key areas of work would be economic cooperation, combating climate change, and adapting to rapid technological change.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope that this year would be important in achieving peace through the unity of democratic countries.
Canada's presidency of the G7, according to the President, could be an important step in strengthening Western allies' support for Ukraine. The united efforts of democratic countries will help put pressure on Russia and create conditions for a just and lasting peace.
‘Today, Canada's presidency of the G7 has begun. And we all look forward to this year - to using our combined strength to achieve a stable and just peace in 2025,’ he wrote.
Also on 1 January, Poland took over the rotating presidency of the EU Council from Hungary.
