Cyprus Promises Maximum Effort to Aid Ukraine’s EU Integration
During his visit to Kyiv on Thursday, Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulides promised comprehensive support for Ukraine on its path to European Union membership.

The Cypriot leader's statements were made at a joint press conference with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and concerned Cyprus' presidency of the EU Council beginning on January 1, 2026, and lasting six months. Christodoulides stressed that Cyprus will remain on Ukraine's side and will do everything possible to promote European integration.
"Cyprus is ready and is doing everything possible on its part to help Ukraine become a member of the European Union," he promised.
According to him, Cyprus supports EU enlargement because it strengthens the collective security and democratic stability of the bloc.
The Cypriot president stressed that peace agreements to end the war must be based on full respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as on the principles of the United Nations Charter. He noted that peace initiatives should promote effective support for Ukraine and ensure the active involvement of the EU Council in the process.
In turn, President Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to Cyprus for its political support and emphasized his hope that the Cypriot Presidency would be “historic” for Ukraine.
He noted that the coming months could bring significant progress in negotiations on Ukraine's EU membership, opening new clusters for discussion and adoption of the necessary decisions.
Christodoulides also emphasized the importance of bilateral relations between Cyprus and Ukraine, noting their shared experience in defending territorial integrity. He noted that Cyprus understands well what military invasion and occupation mean, and this experience allows the country to effectively support Ukraine on its path to the EU. In addition, the President of Cyprus stressed the need to strengthen European sanctions against Russia and to maintain international solidarity in response to aggression.
Against the backdrop of the meeting between the presidents of the two countries, Ukraine's Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus Serhgii Nizhynskyi expressed hope for “good news” in the field of defense cooperation with Cyprus in the near future.
The diplomat noted that during a recent military parade in Cyprus, weapons from various countries, including Israel and Germany, were demonstrated, and among these complexes there are potential models that Cyprus could transfer to Ukraine in exchange for more modern ones from partners.
“Cyprus understands the importance of cooperation with Ukraine, which is a pioneer in the drone industry—both in production and in training and work in the real conditions of modern warfare,” he is convinced. “Therefore, Ukraine is a key partner for Cyprus in matters of defense, security, and emergency response.”
Nizhynskyi also stressed that the priority areas of cooperation during the negotiations between the presidents of Ukraine and Cyprus will be drones, joint military exercises, IT, and cybersecurity.
The first visit of Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides to Ukraine underscores the strategic importance of bilateral relations and Cyprus' readiness to support Ukraine on its path to the EU and in the field of defense. The visit also opens up prospects for active support for Ukraine during Cyprus' six-month presidency of the EU Council. This could help promote European integration and strengthen cooperation in the security sphere.
