Denmark Concludes a Defense Agreement With the USA, Allowing the Placement of American Military Bases
The USA and Denmark have successfully agreed on a defense cooperation deal, creating the possibility of hosting American military bases in the Scandinavian country.
This is reported by Bloomberg.
Under the defense cooperation deal, the USA will be able to station its military at Danish bases in Karup, Skrydstrup, and Aalborg. Additionally, American military personnel will have the right to store weapons and equipment on Danish territory.
It is expected that the official agreement, to be signed this week, will foster closer cooperation between the two countries in the military sphere, including in matters of training and logistics.
It is worth noting that Denmark has pursued a clear policy against the constant presence of foreign troops on its territory for many years. However, today the situation has changed. According to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the new defense cooperation deal signifies "a new breakthrough in Danish defence policy."
"We firmly believe that this is good for the security of Denmark and Europe. In the current situation, with an increasingly aggressive Russia, we need as strong and extensive American support as possible, and that is why we have concluded this agreement," emphasized Prime Minister Frederiksen.
At the same time, according to Danish Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen, after the agreement is signed, it will require official approval from the Danish parliament. This procedure may take about a year.
The minister also emphasized that, according to the agreement, defense cooperation between the countries will last at least 10 years, and during this period, it cannot be terminated.
Recall that official negotiations on a defense agreement between the two countries began early in 2022.
Earlier, it became known that the government of Finland published a bilateral agreement with the USA on military cooperation between the countries.
According to the document, 15 facilities are planned to be located on the territory of Finland, which will be used by American military personnel. Among them are the Rovaniemi air base, the Kuopio-Rissala air base, the Tampere-Pirkkala air base, the Jyväskylä-Tikkakoski air base, and the Upinniemi military-naval base.
In addition, the defense deal organizes military cooperation between Finnish and American forces under NATO auspices. In particular, simplifying and expediting the procedure for the movement of military personnel and equipment within Finland by eliminating the need for "high-level" approval.
