Estonia Urges Citizens to Avoid Travel to Russia Amid Potential Border Closure

Estonian authorities have once again cautioned their citizens against travelling to Russia, citing the possibility of a temporary border closure due to increasing migration pressure. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Margus Tsahkna, emphasized that in the event of border closures, the return of Estonian citizens to the country would be impossible, as reported by PAP.
Estonian citizens are advised to consider the necessity of staying in Russia and, if possible, return to Estonia. Margus Tsahkna personally underscored to journalists that he strongly recommends refraining from traveling to Russia.
"We are ready to provide any practical assistance to Finland and also to close our borders with Russia if necessary. So, I have a very clear recommendation - do not travel to Russia," emphasized the head of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The border between Estonia and Russia stretches 333 kilometers, hosting seven crossing points—both for automobiles, railways, and pedestrians.
It is worth noting that on Tuesday, Finland decided to temporarily close its last active border crossing with Russia for two weeks. Henceforth, asylum applications in Finland from individuals arriving from Russia will only be accepted at ports and airports. However, this decision will not impact freight rail transport between Russia and Finland.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Lithuania expressed support for Finland's decision to close all border crossing points with Russia, citing Russia's organized hybrid attack. However, Lithuania currently has no plans to completely close its borders with Russia, unlike Finland, which made this decision due to migration pressure.
The ministry emphasized that Lithuania maintains regular communication with neighbouring countries and shares relevant information. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda had previously promised to consider economically justified border closures with Russia and Belarus. In August, Minister of Internal Affairs Agne Bilotaite mentioned discussions about various options, including closing the border with the Russian Federation, citing the need to be prepared for different threats.
