On 23 May, at 3 am, Russian border guards unilaterally removed light buoys installed by Estonia to demarcate the border with Russia on the Narva River, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia reports.
"This action by Russia, taken in the shadow of night, fits well with Russia's broader pattern of provocative behaviour, including on its borders with its neighbours, most recently with Lithuania and Finland.
Estonia's reaction has been calm and clear. We regard this as a provocative border incident. Through our border representatives and diplomatic channels, we will inform the Russian Federation of the inadmissibility of such actions, demand explanations for the removal of the buoys and their immediate return," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in an official statement.
Estonia maintains close contacts with its allies and partners as we continue to counter Russia's malicious activities in Europe, the diplomatic agency added.
As a reminder, the aggressor country Russia, which has been waging an occupation and destructive war in Ukraine for three years now, has recently decided to unilaterally change the country's maritime borders with Lithuania and Finland in the Baltic Sea in its favour. Lithuania, Latvia and Finland reacted sharply to such Russian "plans".
