EU Agrees on 16th Package of Sanctions Against Russia

The European Union has agreed on the 16th package of sanctions against Russia, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on social media site X.
She welcomed the agreement. ‘The EU is further strengthening the fight against sanctions circumvention by targeting more vessels of Putin's shadow fleet and introducing new import and export bans,’ von der Leyen wrote.
According to The Financial Times, the new sanctions are aimed, in particular, at the Russian aluminium industry and include further restrictions on oil exports.
The sanctions list includes 13 new banks, 73 tankers of the so-called ‘shadow fleet’ used by Russia to export oil, and a gradual ban on the purchase of certain types of Russian aluminium products by EU countries, according to sources familiar with the package.
The new package, which was agreed on Wednesday morning by ambassadors from all 27 EU countries, also includes sanctions against additional individuals and entities that help Russia wage war against Ukraine.
