EU to Provide Ukraine Largest Military Aid Package Worth €6 Billion

European Union countries are preparing a record €6 billion military aid package for Ukraine, which aims to strengthen Kyiv amid talks between the US and Russia and help Ukraine strengthen its strategic position on the front line before peace talks begin, and become a strong argument for the need for EU involvement in peace talks, Politico reports.
‘European nations are preparing a financial aid package of at least €6 billion for Ukraine to strengthen Kyiv's strategic position amid U.S.-led negotiations with Russia... The package, which would include everything from 1.5 million artillery shells to air defence systems, would mark the largest military aid package the EU has given Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. This package could be announced before the highly symbolic visit of European Commissioners to Kyiv on 24 February,’ the article says.
The article notes that at least three diplomatic sources have provided information on the content of the new EU military aid package for Ukraine. According to two of them, the mentioned amount of €6 billion may be only a ‘down payment’ and may increase to €10 billion as member states review their arsenals and assess what else they can send to Ukraine.
Such proposals are expected to be considered next Monday during a scheduled meeting of EU foreign ministers.
‘Increased military support could help Ukraine rebuild its armed forces, deter Russian attacks on the front line and protect cities from air attacks as Kyiv prepares for peace talks. It could also strengthen the EU's arguments for its inclusion in the talks, the first round of which between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov ended on Tuesday in Riyadh,’ the publication says.
