Latvia to Equip 500 Bomb Shelters with EU Funding

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Latvia has announced that the Thematic Committee on EU Funds (ERDF) has agreed to allocate €22 million from the European Regional Development Fund to speed up the construction of bomb shelters for civilians.
This was reported by the Latvian LSM.
It is expected that this funding will allow at least 500 state and municipal property objects to be adapted and equipped for category III shelters.
In order to move forward with the installation and adaptation of shelters as quickly as possible, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has asked municipalities to submit their proposals for funding by the end of February.
‘This is the first real funding to accelerate the installation and equipment of shelters in Latvia. The ERDF funding allows us to make a significant breakthrough in this segment of civil protection,’ said Minister of the Interior Rihards Kozlovskis.
In order to move forward with the installation and adaptation of the ukrtytes as quickly as possible, the MoIA has asked municipalities to submit their funding proposals by the end of February.
So far, the OAG has inspected 3,200 basements of state and municipal buildings. Of these, 398 were found to be sufficient and 1254 partially sufficient for a bomb shelter. As a result, about half a million Latvian citizens can now take refuge in the event of a Russian threat.
As reported by The Gaze, the US and Ukraine have agreed to preserve Ukrainian cultural property, including the construction of specialised shelters to protect museum collections from bombing.
