EU Approves 18th Sanctions Package Against Russia

The European Union has officially adopted its 18th package of sanctions against Russia, with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas calling it “one of the most powerful ever imposed on the Russian Federation.”
The new measures, aimed at cutting deeper into the Kremlin’s ability to finance its war in Ukraine, introduce sweeping restrictions across several sectors — including energy, finance, military, and disinformation.
“For the first time, we’re designating a flag registry and the biggest Rosneft refinery in India,” Kallas said in a statement posted on X.
“Our sanctions also hit those indoctrinating Ukrainian children. We will keep raising the costs, so stopping the aggression becomes the only path forward for Moscow.”
Among the major actions in this package:
- A ban on the Nord Stream pipelines
- A lower oil price cap to further slash Russian energy revenues
- Sanctions against 105 vessels from Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” and the entities supporting them
- New restrictions on Russian banks’ access to financing
- Increased pressure on Russia’s military-industrial complex
- Targeted measures against Chinese banks aiding sanctions evasion
- Tech export bans on components used in military drones
“We are putting more pressure on Russia’s military industry, Chinese banks that enables sanctions evasion, and blocking tech exports used in drones,” Kallas wrote.
