EU Strongly Condemns Russia’s Latest Nuclear Blackmail as ‘Irresponsible and Unacceptable’
The European Union has strongly condemned Russian leader Vladimir Putin's announcement of a change in Russia's nuclear doctrine, calling it ‘a continuation of highly irresponsible and unacceptable behaviour’.
‘This is not the first time that Putin has played the nuclear card,’ said Peter Stano, spokesperson for the EU's foreign policy service, during a briefing in Brussels yesterday.
He added that the Russian leader has once again revealed his true nature to the world, this time at the highest level during the UN General Assembly, demonstrating that ‘he has no qualms about repeatedly engaging in nuclear brinkmanship’.
‘We, of course, strongly reject these threats. The position of the European Union remains unchanged,’ Stano said.
Stano stressed that the EU ‘strongly rejects this threat’.
‘We are working to convey this position to other international partners, underlining the reckless and irresponsible behaviour of the leader of a country that is a permanent member of the UN Security Council,’ Stano said, noting that Putin undermines the council's core mission of maintaining global peace.
He also noted that the EU is trying to convey this position to international partners, drawing their attention to how insane and irresponsible Putin's behaviour is, representing a permanent member of the UN Security Council, whose main task and responsibility is to maintain peace in the world.
‘So this is just a continuation of the trend of his behaviour and exposes his true face during a very important high-level international event that is taking place right now in New York,’ the EU spokesperson concluded.
As a reminder, on Wednesday, 25 September, Putin said that Russia would expand the conditions under which it is ready to use nuclear weapons.
