EU, US Strike Trade Deal to Cut Tariffs, Boost Energy and Tech Ties
The European Union and the United States have struck a wide-ranging trade agreement aimed at easing tariffs, strengthening energy security, and deepening technology cooperation,

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed this on Sunday after talks with US President Donald Trump in Scotland.
The deal sets a single 15% tariff on most EU exports, covering cars, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, while a “zero-for-zero” regime will eliminate tariffs on aircraft, select chemicals, semiconductor equipment, agricultural goods, and critical raw materials.
Von der Leyen said Brussels and Washington would coordinate efforts to curb global overcapacity in steel and aluminum by lowering tariffs and introducing quotas.
“We will work together to ensure fair global competition and reduce barriers between us. Tariffs will be lowered, and a quota system will be implemented,” she stated.
As part of the pact, the EU will replace Russian oil and gas with significant imports of US liquefied natural gas, crude and nuclear fuel, while American-made AI chips will power European gigafactories, reinforcing the transatlantic tech alliance.
She also promised to open “wider access for American goods to our market.”
The US and the EU had been engaged in difficult negotiations over future trade conditions amid threats from the US to impose high tariffs on European goods.
The breakthrough comes after months of tense talks, during which the EU prepared a €93 billion countermeasure package in response to Washington’s threats of steep tariffs on European goods.
