President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has defended the International Criminal Court following US President Donald Trump's executive order imposing sanctions on the ICC.
The President of the European Commission expressed support for the International Criminal Court. At the same time, she did not directly condemn the sanctions imposed by the decision of the US President.
‘Europe will always stand up for justice and respect for international law,’ the European Commission President said.
‘The International Criminal Court guarantees accountability for international crimes and gives a voice to victims around the world. It must be free to fight impunity on a global scale,’ she added.
The day before, on 6 February, US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court. The main reason for the sanctions was a warrant issued by the ICC for the arrest of senior Israeli officials.
