Former Moldovan Envoy to Ukraine Tapped as Deputy PM for Transnistria Reintegration
Moldova’s incoming prime minister-designate, Alexandru Munteanu, has announced plans to appoint Valeriu Kivera, the country’s former ambassador to Ukraine, as Deputy Prime Minister for the Reintegration of Transnistria.
The Gaze reports this, referring to Munteanu’s post on social media.
The politician described Kivera as a seasoned career diplomat who represented Moldova in Kyiv from 2021 to 2025 and has long-standing experience in regional and international affairs.
Alongside Kivera’s nomination, Munteanu said he intends to name Yevhen Osmochescu as Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization.
Osmochescu has worked extensively with European Union institutions, the World Bank, and the OECD, contributing to various modernization and reform initiatives.
For the position of Finance Minister, Munteanu proposed Adrian Gavrilița, an economist with two decades of experience in financial management and policy design.
Last week, Moldovan President Maia Sandu formally nominated businessman Alexandru Munteanu, who has lived in Ukraine for over 20 years, as prime minister.
His proposed cabinet is expected to prioritize economic recovery, institutional reforms, and the peaceful reintegration of Transnistria – a region that has been outside Chișinău’s control since the early 1990s.
In turn, Ukraine’s former ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, has praised the nomination of Alexandru Munteanu as Moldova’s next prime minister, calling it “good news not only for Moldova, but also for Ukraine and the European Union.”
“Alexandru is deeply committed and loves his country, but Ukraine, the U.S., France, and Europe are not foreign to him,” Markarova said. “He understands very well who the Russians are and the danger posed by Russian imperial ambitions and hostile actions in our region.”
As The Gaze reported earlier, on October 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Moldovan President Maia Sandu held talks in Copenhagen, reaffirming their countries’ shared commitment to advancing toward European Union membership and strengthening bilateral economic ties.
