Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Moldovan President Maia Sandu held talks in Copenhagen on Thursday, reaffirming their countries’ shared commitment to advancing toward European Union membership and strengthening bilateral economic ties.

The Gaze reports this, referring to the Office of the President of Ukraine.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the European Political Community summit, where both leaders emphasized that Ukraine and Moldova should progress in lockstep toward EU accession.

Zelenskyy congratulated Sandu on the recent victory of pro-European parties in Moldova’s parliamentary elections, praising voters for resisting Moscow’s attempts to destabilize the political landscape.

“Despite all Russian efforts to sow instability, the result of these elections was a victory for Moldova and for Europe,” Zelenskyy said, according to his office.

He also applauded Moldova for successfully completing bilateral screening procedures within the accession process and expressed gratitude for Chisinau’s support of Ukraine’s EU bid.

“I met with President Zelenskyy to reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, security, and the EU path. As neighbours, we stand by each other – and we have each other’s back,” Sandy stated after the meeting on X.

The two leaders agreed it was essential to ensure that the first negotiation cluster is opened simultaneously for both Ukraine and Moldova.

They also discussed ways to expand trade and economic cooperation, underlining the importance of deeper regional integration alongside their European aspirations.

Zelenskyy’s talks with Sandu came as part of a broader diplomatic effort at the Copenhagen summit, where the Ukrainian president also met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

The Copenhagen gathering, the seventh summit of the European Political Community, focused on Europe’s security and stability, with Ukraine’s EU accession and continued support against Russian aggression high on the agenda.

As The Gaze previously reported, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said on Thursday that the European Union must begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova before the end of 2025.
