In Denmark, the Greenlandic parliament yesterday urgently considered a bill that, among other things, would ban political parties in the country from accepting anonymous and foreign contributions. The bill was urgently considered three days after President Donald Trump expressed his desire for the United States to take possession of the huge and mineral-rich Arctic island, which belongs to Denmark. According to the Danish translation of the parliamentary document, the bill is aimed at protecting the ‘political integrity of Greenland’ and will come into force immediately.
This comes on the heels of the massive interest that foreign players have shown in Greenland, intervening with the intention of attracting money and investment.
Denmark is a long-standing US ally and a founding member of NATO, and a major US military base is located on its semi-autonomous territory.
The bill ‘must be considered in light of geopolitical interests in Greenland and the current situation where representatives of an allied great power have expressed interest in seizing and controlling Greenland,’ the document says.
Before taking office on 20 January, Trump said he would not rule out the use of military force to seize control of Greenland, calling it vital to US national security. His eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, visited Greenland last month and told citizens: ‘We're going to treat you well.’
