Hungary is the only EU country that has not signed the joint statement of more than fifty states condemning Russia's activities in the UN Security Council and supporting Ukraine.
According to Ukrinform's own correspondent in New York, only Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto is present at the ‘ministerial level’ meeting of the Security Council, which is chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Among the members of the Security Council, only Switzerland is represented at the ministerial meeting. Among the non-members of the Security Council, in addition to Hungary, Iran, Libya and Kuwait have delegated their ministers.
Belarus and Thailand are represented at the level of deputy ministers.
As reported by Ukrinform, Russia convened the UN Security Council on Tuesday to discuss multilateral cooperation in order to divert the attention of the international community from its war in Ukraine, its crimes against humanity, Moscow's blatant violations of the UN Charter and its abuses in the Security Council. More than fifty countries condemned Russia's actions and supported Ukraine by signing a statement read by Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, Serhii Kyslytsya. However, Lavrov is visiting the UN headquarters on 16-17 July, taking advantage of Russia's presidency of the Security Council this month.
