Lithuanian President Proposes to Reform UN Security Council Due to Its Inability to Maintain Peace
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda believes that the UN Security Council needs to be reformed amid Russia's war against Ukraine.
He said this at the Future Summit in New York and reported it on the X network.
According to Nauseda, the lack of a multilateral response to Russia's aggression against Ukraine ‘raises serious doubts about the UN's ability to maintain global peace and security’.
‘It is clear that significant reforms of the Security Council are needed. The UN must be empowered to stop and deter aggressors,’ he said.
Nausėda stressed that countries should return to supporting Ukraine based on the rules of the international order.
In addition, the Lithuanian president called on the international community to do more to limit Russia's ability to continue its ‘colonial war’.
Recently, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that the reform of the UN Security Council should include expanding its membership, abolishing the veto for any state and expelling any member that participates in an ‘illegal war’ such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
As The Gaze previously reported, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address the UN General Assembly on 25 September.
