Norwegian Fishermen Catch US Nuclear Submarine in Their Nets
A US Navy nuclear submarine has been caught in fishermen's nets off the coast of Norway. This was reported by The Telegraph.
The US Navy submarine Virginia came across a fishing net that had just been thrown out to catch halibut and was anchored to the seabed. The submarine dragged the net over a distance of more than three and a half kilometres.
The US Navy has confirmed that the submarine became entangled in a fishing net in the Malangsfjord near Tromsø.
A Norwegian Coast Guard ship escorting the submarine out of the harbour quickly helped to remove the net.
‘The net is on the seabed. It's gone, and we'll probably never find it again,’ said Harald Engen, one of the fishermen.
However, the 22-year-old took the loss relatively calmly. ‘There's no point in getting upset about it,’ he added.
The 115-metre-long, 7,800-tonne USS Virginia is the namesake of the so-called Virginia class, a class of nuclear attack submarines.
