Ukrainian forces launched a large-scale strike on a Russian Shahed drone depot at Donetsk airport, destroying about a thousand drones and related equipment.

The Gaze reports on it, referring to Militarnyi.

According to the Special Operations Forces, the attack took place on November 5 and was the result of extensive reconnaissance work involving units of the Special Operations Forces, Unmanned Systems Forces, missile forces, and artillery.

More than 90% of Ukrainian strike drones successfully reached their targets, causing a series of powerful explosions, which were confirmed by numerous eyewitness videos from Donetsk.

The former international airport, where the Russians had set up a military base, stored not only about a thousand Shahed (“Geran-2”) drones, but also more than 1,500 combat units, fuel, and equipment for assembling and launching drones.

As a result of the strike, the ammunition and fuel depot was completely destroyed, the UAV pre-launch preparation point was eliminated, and energy and communication nodes were damaged.

Analysts note that both strike drones and cruise missiles were used during the attack. Preparations for the operation lasted several months and included detailed intelligence gathering by various units, including the 414th Separate Brigade of Unmanned Systems “Madjar's Birds.”

Donetsk is a large industrial city in eastern Ukraine and the administrative center of Donetsk Oblast.

Before the war in Donbas began in 2014, Donetsk was one of the most important economic and cultural centers in the country. Since 2014, the city has been under occupation by Russian forces and groups supported by them, and after the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation in 2022, it became one of the key logistical and military hubs for the occupiers.

Three years after the full-scale invasion, Russia has not managed to completely capture the Donetsk region, over which fierce fighting continues.

Donetsk Airport occupies one of the most heroic and fiercest pages in the war in eastern Ukraine. From May 2014 to January 20, 2015, Ukrainian military, volunteers, and medics defended the airport from Russian troops and the militants they supported for more than 240 days. The unbreakable defense of the airport became a symbol of the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian army, and the defenders of the terminals were called “cyborgs.”
