Romania Launches Probe Into Border Drone Crash Near the Border With Ukraine

Amid Russia's massive missile and drone strike on Ukraine, a drone crashed in Romania. The Romanian Ministry of Defence confirmed that on Thursday, 28 March, in the evening, fragments were identified on agricultural land on the island of Braila, which probably came from an aircraft (drone).
"The Ministry of National Defence, together with the specialised structures of the National Defence, Public Order and National Security System, is investigating the incident on Friday, 29 March 2024, in accordance with the established operational procedures," said Ministry of National Defence.
Local media outlet debraila.ro published an image of the drone crash site, which occurred at around 10pm. Representatives of the army and law enforcement officers have already cordoned off the area.
The place where the drone crashed is 8 km from the ferry crossing from the municipality of Braila to the Big Island of Braila.
It is noted that before the crash, the drone, whose origin is still being established, penetrated 23 kilometres deep into Romanian territory.
The authorities have not yet provided official information about this episode or the origin of the drone.
The incident has not been officially confirmed and no RO-Alert has been issued, as has been the case in similar situations, news.ro reports.
On the night of 29 March, Russians launched a massive attack on Ukraine using missiles and drones, a total of 99 air strikes. The Ukrainian Defence Forces destroyed 84 enemy air targets - 58 Shaheds and 26 missiles.
As a reminder, at least three Russian drones went down in Romania in September 2023. The last one was found on 13 September in Tulcea County.
