Romania to Set Up Training Centre for Ukrainian Marines With UK Support
The Romanian parliament has approved President Klaus Iohannis' proposal to establish a training centre for Ukrainian marines in the country, with the help of the United Kingdom.
This is reported by Agerpres.
233 deputies voted for the decision, 18 voted against, and 25 abstained.
In a letter to the parliament, Iohannis wrote that recent developments in the war waged by Russia against Ukraine have highlighted the need to strengthen the training of the Ukrainian armed forces.
‘As a result of the analysis, it became clear that Romania has the opportunity to contribute to the Coalition of Maritime Forces and Capabilities by hosting a maritime training centre on its national territory, as well as to support the training of Ukrainian marines, within the limits of its capabilities,’ the Romanian president said.
The proposed plan envisages that the facility will operate for two years, with Romania reserving the right to terminate the commitment at any time during the training process or after the expiry of the established period.
‘The international community will support the operation of the facility, and the funding and planning for this support will be fully provided by the UK in the initial phase. The training centre will position Romania as a regional leader in maritime operations training, helping to increase cohesion, demonstrate unity and strengthen Euro-Atlantic deterrence and defence,’ the letter reads.
As The Gaze previously reported, in mid-September, Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov said that a group of Ukrainian pilots were training on F-16 fighter jets in Romania.
