Russia's War Against Ukraine Is an Existential Threat to All of Us – Josep Borrell
On October 1, 2023, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, visited Kyiv to commemorate the fallen defenders of Ukraine and express support for those currently defending the country.
"I am very pleased to be in Kyiv to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba to honor the memory of the fallen defenders and express support for those currently defending Ukraine against Russia's unwarranted aggression and fighting for our shared values," noted Josep Borrell.
This isn't the first time that such words about an existential threat to Europe from Russia have been spoken by a high-ranking European politician. "Russia's war against Ukraine is an existential threat to all of us. During our first personal meeting with Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, we discussed ongoing military assistance from the EU. Ukraine needs more capabilities, and it needs them urgently. We are preparing long-term security commitments for Ukraine," emphasized Josep Borrell.
During the official address on October 1, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared, "Our defense of Ukraine against the Russian onslaught relies on the historically greatest unity of our society. It's a unity we cherish. Ukraine has historically received the greatest support from the world. And never again will Ukraine trade its future, its sovereignty, and its will for illusory promises of peace. Ukraine has drawn historical conclusions."
October 1 holds great significance for Ukrainians, encompassing multiple celebrations. It marks the anniversary of the formation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), Cossack Day, Defender's Day of Ukraine, and the religious holiday of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin.
The creation of the UPA in history is crucial as it was a component of the Ukrainian liberation movement from 1920 to 1950. This liberation struggle laid the foundations for the modern state of Ukraine.
The celebration of Ukrainian Cossack Day stems from the significant consolidation of Ukrainian identity during the struggle against foreign invaders in the 16th-17th centuries. The emergence of distinct military formations, the Cossacks (15th century), played a vital role, leading to the establishment of a unique state (16th century) with a republican system – the Zaporizhian Sich, a political stronghold for Ukrainians.
The major Orthodox holiday of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin and the Nativity of Mary is dedicated to the miraculous appearance of the Mother of God to believers. According to tradition, over a thousand years ago, people besieged and prayed for salvation. According to accounts, the Virgin Mary appeared to them, covering them with her protection (omophorion), thus saving them.
The alignment of these important holidays on a single day is not coincidental. It signifies a moment of self-awareness and concentrated efforts to defend the independence and freedom of Ukrainians.
