A recent study published in BMC Medicine sheds light on the impact of long-term caffeine consumption on the body. Findings from researchers suggest that controlled regular intake of caffeine could prevent weight gain and reduce the risk of inflammation and joint degeneration.

The aim of the study was to assess various health outcomes associated with genetic predictors of caffeine levels in plasma. Researchers conducted an analysis to understand how caffeine may affect osteoarthritis, postmenopausal bleeding, serum metabolites, and plasma proteins. In total, the study involved 428,860 individuals.

Scientists note they found protective properties of caffeine against both weight gain and the development of osteoarthritis.

Stephen Fiore, MD, certified orthopaedic surgeon and founder of Cannabis MD Telemed, highlights that caffeine may have protective effects against excess weight and joint disorders through several mechanisms.

"It is known that caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, which can accelerate metabolism and promote fat breakdown. This increased metabolism potentially aids weight control and reduces the risk of obesity," noted Stephen Fiore.

Fiore also emphasizes caffeine's ability to enhance physical performance and endurance during workouts, which can contribute to maintaining a healthy weight and joint condition.

It's worth noting that another study, the results of which were published in BMJ Medicine, demonstrates the relationship between body fat levels and caffeine consumption. Elevated caffeine levels in the blood are associated with lower body fat accumulation and reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

According to the results of the study, higher genetically predicted caffeine levels in the blood are associated with lower body weight (body mass index), less fat accumulation, and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

It was found that among all factors influencing weight loss and reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, caffeine intake accounted for 43%.

As researchers point out, caffeine speeds up metabolism, enhances fat burning, and reduces appetite. Daily consumption of 100 mg of caffeine increases energy expenditure by 100 calories per day, resulting in weight loss and reduced risk of obesity as a consequence.
