Study: Over 37% of Ukrainians Support Legalization of Same-Sex Marriages

More than 37% of Ukrainians have expressed their support for the idea of legalizing same-sex marriages, according to survey data conducted by the sociological group "Rating" on the eve of Ukraine's Independence Day.
Based on the survey results, 37% of surveyed Ukrainian citizens endorse the possibility of registering marriages between individuals of the same sex. In contrast, 42% of respondents opposed this initiative, with 33% of them strongly objecting. 22% of respondents did not express a clear stance on the matter.
It is worth noting that younger respondents show greater support for the possibility of same-sex marriages compared to older participants in the survey. Additionally, women exhibited more tolerance towards such unions compared to men.
The survey, carried out from August 16 to 20, 2023, utilized the CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interviewing) method. Anonymous interviews were conducted online through the "Rating Online" platform. The total sample size consisted of 6050 individuals, with a margin of error not exceeding 1.5%.
Representatives of the human rights LGBT center "Our World" added that the results of this "Rating" survey align with previous data from the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), which was commissioned by "Our World" in June 2023.
According to the KIIS research, 28% of respondents supported the idea of establishing registered partnerships for same-sex couples, which bear certain similarities to marriage. 39% expressed opposition, while 26% stated that they were indifferent to the matter.
"Thus, according to the results of all public opinion surveys conducted since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, Ukrainian society's attitude towards the legalization of same-sex unions is mostly tolerant-approving or indifferent — and this attitude is consistently improving. According to the "Rating" sociological group, the number of their supporters has almost equaled the number of opponents," added representatives from the "Our World" LGBT center.
Recall that a bill on civil partnerships for same-sex and opposite-sex couples was introduced in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in March 2023. Registered partnership serves as an alternative for couples who cannot or do not wish to enter into marriage.
