Sweden to Donate €44 Million to Ukraine to Support Energy and Heat Supply
On 5 September, the Swedish government decided to allocate an additional SEK 500 million (almost €44 million) to support heat and power supply in Ukraine.
This was reported in a press release from the Swedish government.
The funds allocated by Sweden will be used to finance the installation of two gas turbines for electricity generation. The production facilities will be protected in a way that minimises the devastating effects of Russian attacks.
The project will be implemented by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency in cooperation with the Ukrainian side and international financial institutions. It is planned that the facility will be operational in 2025.
According to the Minister for International Development, Cooperation and Foreign Trade of Sweden, Johan Forssell, the contribution will help provide electricity to 185,000 Ukrainians and ‘will help support the vital activity of Ukrainian society, economy and business.’
‘This is crucial for Ukraine's resilience,’ the minister stressed.
Earlier this year, it became known that the Swedish government had allocated €26.4 million to support energy efficiency projects in Ukraine.
The European Union has previously assured that it is working with Ukraine to help it rebuild its energy infrastructure.
As The Gaze previously reported, on 31 May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed an agreement on security cooperation with Sweden.
