Swiss Intelligence: Russia and China Pose Top Espionage Threats

Switzerland’s Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) has raised alarm over an elevated threat of espionage within the country, warning that Russia and China are the primary actors behind it, The Gaze reports, citing AFP.
In its latest annual intelligence report, the agency stated that global instability is worsening, directly impacting Switzerland’s national security.
“The global confrontation between the United States on one side, and China and Russia on the other, is intensifying. This has direct consequences for Switzerland: the threat of espionage is high, and the proliferation of weapons is increasing,” the report says.
The FIS emphasized that the security environment surrounding Switzerland has been deteriorating year after year. According to the agency, multiple foreign agents are believed to be operating in Switzerland under cover identities — posing as diplomats, businesspeople, journalists, or even tourists.
The report underlines that Russia and China pose the greatest espionage threats, citing their extensive intelligence networks active in Switzerland. These networks are said to be targeting Swiss federal institutions, private companies, international organizations, and research institutions.
The FIS also warned that both Russia and China possess sufficient resources to monitor foreign and Swiss targets, and that both countries are expected to continue conducting intelligence operations within Switzerland, including activities aimed at preparing for hybrid warfare against Western nations.
