The International Maritime Organization, a UN agency dealing with maritime safety issues, has presented an updated list of Council members for 2024-2025.

This information is available on the Organization's official page.

Thus, the new members of the Agency's Council are the following countries: China, Greece, Italy, Japan, Liberia, Norway, Panama, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Additionally, during the Assembly of the IMO, a list of the so-called "Category B" - 10 states with the greatest interest in international maritime trade was announced: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, and Sweden.

Earlier, the IMO also presented its work on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from vessels, following the Organization's newly adopted strategy to achieve zero levels of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

IMO's strategic ambitions include transitioning to technologies, fuels, or other energy sources with zero or near-zero levels of greenhouse gas emissions, aiming for these technologies to constitute at least 5% of global shipping by 2030.

Currently, the organization is implementing a series of significant measures to enhance the energy efficiency of shipping. According to IMO's technical collaborator in the Marine Environment Division, Camille Bourgeon, ongoing impact assessment work is underway for member states to make decisions and implement further measures in 2025 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vessels, including the technical element.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized UN agency founded in 1948 to ensure safe navigation, including preventing ship-related environmental pollution, primarily maritime.

It is worth noting that this year, Russia did not join the updated composition of the International Maritime Organization.

Earlier, The Gaze reported that during his address to the participants of the 33rd IMO Assembly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that 'Russia has no place' in the organization, as this country has caused the most harm to maritime navigation.
