The Canadian Government Has Been Urged To Grant Ukrainians Permanent Residency In the Country
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress initiated this request.
The Gaze reports on it according to Ukrinform.
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) and Senator Stan Kucher have appealed to Lena Metlege Diab, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, to grant permanent residency to Ukrainians forced to flee their homeland due to Russia's genocidal war.
They made this statement at a press conference in Ottawa.
"The problem facing the Canadian government is essentially a moral one. Should we support people displaced by a genocidal war who have not only sought refuge here but have also made Canada their home? The minister can take action if she decides to do so. We hope she will do so — and do so quickly," Kucher said.
Also speaking at the press conference were Ukrainian Gala Darkina, who moved to Canada with her two children because of the war, Father Taras Kinash, a priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Ottawa and spiritual mentor to numerous displaced Ukrainians, UCC Executive Director Ihor Mykhalchyshyn, and Oksana Zubriy, Senator Kutcher's advisor on Ukraine.
"In October 2025, the UCC asked the government to create a path to permanent residence in Canada for eligible CUAET (Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel) visa holders and their families. Until their status is resolved, CUAET visa holders remain in limbo and worry about their future. We urge the Canadian government to take action today," said Mykhailchyshyn.
As reported by Ukrinform, difficulties in obtaining permanent resident status in Canada create significant problems for Ukrainians who have sought refuge in the country during the war.
