The State of New York Has Confirmed the Recognition of the Holodomor - the Genocide of the Ukrainian People
The American state of New York issued a proclamation on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor, denouncing the Kremlin-orchestrated famine, known as the 'Holodomor' of 1932-1933, as genocide against the Ukrainian people.
This was reported by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Oksana Markarova.
According to the announcement, the state of New York issued a proclamation and declared November as the month of remembrance for the Ukrainian Holodomor genocide. In turn, Ambassador Markarova thanked New York Governor Kathy Hochul for solidarity with Ukraine.
"New York is proud to have the largest Ukrainian community in the United States, and we join the Ukrainian community in commemorating this significant date and reminding the world of the lessons of the Ukrainian genocide, as we strive for a world free from human oppression and injustice," the proclamation stated.
Today, the Ukrainian community in New York will also honor the memory of the victims of artificial famine at the Cathedral Requiem Service in St. Patrick's Cathedral.
It is worth noting that this month, the state of Iowa recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people, becoming the 33rd state in the United States to make such a decision.
Earlier, the states of Wyoming, Washington, Maryland, and Arizona also recognized the Holodomor as genocide.
In October this year, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe recognized the Holodomor of 1932-33 as genocide against the Ukrainian people. The decision was adopted by a large majority of votes during the debates on 'The Role of the Council of Europe in preventing conflicts, restoring credibility of international institutions and promoting global peace' and 'ensuring a just peace in Ukraine and lasting security in Europe.'
Currently, about 30 countries worldwide have officially recognized the artificially created famine by the Soviet government as genocide against the Ukrainian people. These include Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, Georgia, Ecuador, Estonia, Iceland, Canada, Colombia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Moldova, Germany, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, the United States, Hungary, France, Croatia, the Czech Republic, as well as the European Parliament.
Estimates of the number of deaths from the Holodomor of 1932-33 vary from four to ten million people. The exact number of casualties remains unknown as the Soviet authorities carefully concealed the facts of their crimes.
