The United Kingdom government has imposed sanctions on 30 vessels carrying large quantities of Russian oil. This is the largest package of restrictions imposed by London against this fleet, which confirms Britain's leadership in the fight against Russian sanctions avoidance schemes. This was reported on the British government's website.

British sanctions have been imposed on 30 ships of Russia's ‘shadow fleet’ responsible for transporting billions of pounds worth of oil and oil products over the past year alone.

‘With half of the vessels sanctioned today having transported over $4.3 billion worth of oil and oil products such as petrol in the last year alone, this is the largest UK sanctions package of its kind,’ the government explained.

The move will further limit the Kremlin's ability to finance its illegal war in Ukraine and its malign activities around the world, and will bring the total number of oil tankers under UK sanctions to 73 - more than any other country.

The sanctions announcement comes as Foreign Secretary David Lammy is using the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Italy to push other countries to keep up the pressure on the Russian war machine, alongside efforts to increase military and financial support for Ukraine.

Oil revenues are a key source of funding for the Kremlin's illegal war in Ukraine.

‘Russian oil revenues are fuelling the fire of war and destruction in Ukraine. I will work with our G7 partners and beyond to put relentless pressure on the Kremlin to cut off the flow of money to its war chest, undermine its war machine and curb its malign behaviour around the world,’ Lammy said.

According to him, the UK sanctions are working, and Russia is becoming increasingly dependent on states such as North Korea and Iran for military equipment, and is even forced to send North Korean troops to support the illegal invasion.

It is known that the next package of European Union sanctions against Russia will also target the ‘shadow fleet’ that exists to circumvent Western oil sanctions.
