Ukraine has completed the screening of its legislation with the European Union, a key technical step required before formal accession talks can move forward.

The Gaze reports this, referring to a post by EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.

Kos, who began a three-day visit to Ukraine on Monday, hailed the milestone as a sign of Ukraine’s determination to pursue its European path despite the ongoing war.

“Today marks an important step on Ukraine’s path to the EU. In the most difficult circumstances, Ukraine has completed the screening process of its entire legislation at record speed, laying the foundations for its European future,” she wrote on X.

She called the achievement “an important step on Ukraine’s path to the EU” and urged Kyiv to maintain the momentum of reforms.

Speaking from Zakarpattia, where her trip began, Kos said EU experts had examined more than 100,000 pages of Ukrainian legislation and compared them with EU law – all in under a year, faster than for any candidate state in the bloc’s history.

On Tuesday, Kos traveled to Lviv to open the “Week of Resilience of Ukrainian Cities,” an event aimed at strengthening local democracy and post-war recovery.

“This visit sends a strong signal that local self-government matters. Cities are the true architects of European integration,” Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said in a statement.

Kos also signed the city’s Book of Distinguished Guests, honored fallen Ukrainian defenders, and visited the UNBROKEN rehabilitation center and EU-funded social housing for displaced families.

Lviv regional governor Maksym Kozytskyi noted that decentralization reforms have been among Ukraine’s most successful and called for greater EU focus on small towns and villages that make up the majority of the region’s population.

Despite the landmark achievement, Ukraine’s path to EU membership faces political headwinds. Hungary continues to veto the opening of accession negotiations.

As The Gaze previously reported, European Council President António Costa is spearheading efforts to push forward Ukraine’s EU accession bid, attempting to bypass Hungary’s persistent opposition ahead of a pivotal summit of EU leaders in Copenhagen this week.
