Ukraine Launches K4 Program to Fund AI Startups for Military Innovation
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has launched the K4 Startup Studio, a groundbreaking initiative designed to harness artificial intelligence (AI) for battlefield innovation.

With support from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Defense and Ukraine’s Better Regulation Delivery Office, the program aims to fund and accelerate AI-based defense solutions that could reshape Ukraine’s military capabilities.
K4 introduces a dynamic new model of civil-military collaboration, directly linking AI developers with soldiers, field experts, and world-class mentors.
The initiative seeks solutions to the mission-critical challenges identified by the Ukrainian military, but also encourages creative, independently proposed technologies that could enhance national defense.
Up to 10 teams will be selected through a rigorous, multi-stage competition. A specialized grant committee, including active-duty personnel and tech specialists, will evaluate applicants.
Of those selected, four teams will each receive $250,000 to scale their solutions. The total grant pool amounts to $1 million.
"We have real examples of the effective use of AI in combat conditions, that is why we believe in this direction and attract partners to invest in Ukrainian developments,” said Kateryna Chernohorenko, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Defense for Digital Development. “K4 is a program for those who are ready to turn their code into a weapon in the hands of our defenders.”
Selected startups will undergo an intensive four-month development sprint, featuring mentorship from global and Ukrainian experts, hands-on testing in live combat conditions, and direct feedback from military users.
This will be followed by six months of individualized support to help teams attract investment or secure state procurement contracts.
Built on best practices from leading global accelerators, K4 offers two unique advantages: direct integration into Ukraine’s defense infrastructure and real-world validation under wartime conditions.
