Ukraine to Consider French President Macron’s Proposal on Stationing Foreign Troops
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that he is open to the potential deployment of Western troops in Ukraine, as Kyiv needs security guarantees until the country is invited to join NATO. Therefore, we can now consider French President Emmanuel Macron's proposal for the presence of foreign troops on Ukrainian territory.
‘Today we also discussed how to ensure Ukraine's security in the period between the invitation to NATO and membership in the Alliance. In my opinion, we can think and work on President Macron's position on the possible presence of some international forces to ensure security before Ukraine joins NATO,’ the President of Ukraine said.
He recalled that French President Emmanuel Macron had suggested that some part of the troops of a country should be present on the territory of Ukraine. This would supposedly guarantee security while Ukraine is not in the Alliance.
‘But we must have a clear understanding of when Ukraine will be in the EU and when Ukraine will be in NATO. Understanding our future, these would be very effective guarantees,’ Zelenskyy concluded.
At the end of February, French President Emmanuel Macron did not rule out the possibility that European countries would send troops to Ukraine, but warned that there was no consensus at this stage, as the allies agreed to make more efforts to deliver ammunition faster.
