Ukraine has asked the Mexican government to execute an International Criminal Court warrant and arrest Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin if he arrives at the inauguration of newly elected President Claudia Sheinbaum on 1 October.

This was reported by the Embassy of Ukraine in Mexico.

The diplomats thanked Mexico for inviting them to the inauguration of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The embassy noted that they recognise the fact that Mexico invites representatives of all countries with which it has diplomatic relations to the inauguration, but reminded the country of the ICC's arrest warrant for Putin.

"We hope that the Mexican government is aware of the fact that Vladimir Putin is a war criminal suspected of abducting and forcibly deporting Ukrainian children to Russia, whose arrest warrant was issued by the International Criminal Court, whose jurisdiction Mexico recognises... We believe that Mexico will execute the international arrest warrant by handing over the aforementioned to the UN judicial body in The Hague," the Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico said in a letter published on its Facebook page.

Mexico falls under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which issued the arrest warrant for Putin. Mexico signed the Rome Statute in 2005.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry later told Reuters that the government had sent invitations to all countries with which it has international relations, as well as to international organisations of which Mexico is a member.

As a reminder, Mexico held presidential elections in early June, and the candidate from the ruling coalition, Claudia Scheinbaum, won.
