Ukrainian Christmas in the ancient capital of Japan: a nativity play was performed in Japanese in Kyoto.
Last Sunday, Ukrainian Christmas came to Kyoto. The Ukrainian community of the city, together with their Japanese friends, organized a real holiday at the International Exchange Center, the central event of which was a traditional nativity play adapted into Japanese.
In addition to the nativity play, the audience was treated to Ukrainian Christmas carols and a presentation on Christmas traditions – the didukh, the Christmas star, and festive foods and drinks.
The program of the event also included modern and folk dances, an exhibition of drawings on the theme of Ukrainian Christmas traditions, treating guests to Carpathian herbal teas, and a shop selling ingredients for borscht.
A master class on weaving Ukrainian Christmas decorations and amulets, known as didukh, was held at the Ukrainian café Krainy in Tokyo.
